Opatija is one of the most renowned historic seaside towns on the Adriatic coast, located in the Kvarner Bay beneath the slopes of Mount Učka. Known for its elegant Austro-Hungarian architecture, Mediterranean climate, lush parks, and scenic coastal promenade (Lungomare), Opatija has long been recognized as a center of culture, science, and tourism. Its rich historical heritage, combined with modern conference facilities and excellent accessibility, makes it an ideal venue for international scientific meetings and professional networking.
The nearby fishing village of Volosko preserves the authentic spirit of the northern Adriatic coast, with narrow stone streets, traditional houses, and a strong connection to Croatian maritime heritage. Volosko is also historically significant as the birthplace of the distinguished geophysicist and seismologist Andrija Mohorovičić, whose discovery of the Mohorovičić discontinuity (“Moho”) profoundly influenced modern Earth sciences.
